August is National Dog Month, so it’s time to unleash a little extra love! Why leave your dog at home when Houston has plenty of places where you, your sweetheart, and your pup can enjoy a date together? From places to grab a drink to movie nights and scenic parks, the Bayou City has plenty of ways to make your next date a paws-itively good time. So grab the leash, pack some treats, and get ready for a date that’s anything but ruff.
1) Breweries~ Barks & Beers
Grab your sweetheart, your pup, and a pint and head to some of Houston’s best breweries for a hoppy date for everyone. Many of Houston’s craft breweries have pet-friendly patios. Sip on craft beer, grab a flight, and settle into the outdoor space while your furry third wheel enjoys the fresh air. We recommend the following pet-friendly breweries: Walking Stick Brewing Company, Frost Town Brewing, Eureka Heights Brew Co., and 8th Wonder.
2) Moonstruck Drive-In~ Retro with Rover
Cue the romantic movie soundtrack and snuggle up for a date under the stars at Moonstruck Drive-In. This retro outdoor movie theater gives you and your sweetheart the chance to watch a movie from the comfort of your car while enjoying Houston skyline views and your pup can come along, too, as long as they’re leashed. Grab some concessions, settle in, and let the big screen provide the entertainment while your dog gets to be part of your retro movie date night. It’s basically puppy love with a side of popcorn.
3) Parks~ Bark in the Parks
For couples who prefer their dates with a little fresh air and plenty of room to roam, Houston’s parks are a natural choice. Pack a pup-nic, go for a leisurely stroll all together, take some pics as a pack, and just enjoy spending some quality time together. Remember to keep your dog on leash and pick up after them. Market Square Park, Russ Pitman Park, Memorial Park, Helen’s Park, Spotts Park, Smither Park, Stude Park, Eleanor Tinsley Park, and Brays Bayou Park are some of our favorite parks to enjoy with your sweetheart and dog. You’re sure to have a tail wagging good time together.
4) City Orchard~ Toast to Your Dog
Cider lovers can raise a glass to puppy love at City Orchard. This Houston cidery creates its ciders using fresh apples and offers everything from crisp, dry Texas Dry to fruit-infused and specialty blends. Their taproom gives couples a relaxed place to enjoy a drink together, and the patio makes it a natural choice for bringing along your furry plus-one. Order a flight, share a snack, and settle in for some quality time with your sweetheart and your favorite sidekick. After all, a little cider and puppy cuddles sounds like a pretty sweet date.
5) Axelrad~ A Fetching Date
Axelrad is a relaxed hangout known for its sprawling outdoor space, colorful hammocks, live music, food trucks, and relaxed atmosphere. Leashed dogs are always welcome. Axelrad even provides dog bowls and treats for its four-legged guests, so your pup can feel like a VIP while you two kick back with a craft beer and enjoy the good vibes. With plenty of space to lounge and lots happening around you, it’s a fetching choice for a casual date where everyone in the pack can have a good time.
Don’t have a dog of your own to celebrate National Dog Month with? You can still celebrate and make a huge difference for a dog! The Houston Humane Society allows adults to check out an adoptable shelter dog for a day of fun through their Doggy Day Out program. Sign up and the staff can help you find a furry friend to third wheel on your next date. It’s a win-win, you get an unforgettable outing and the dog gets a day full of love and adventure. Houston proves that some of the best dates really do go to the dogs regardless of whether it’s your own dog or a shelter dog your taking out for some fun. After all, love is even sweeter when it’s shared with someone who thinks you’re both pawsome.
