There are bars one visits for a drink, bars one visits to be seen having a drink, and then there is La Carafe where one has the distinct impression that several patrons from the past simply neglected to leave. Housed in one of Houston’s oldest commercial buildings, La Carafe seems less constructed than accumulated, as though generations of conversation, candle smoke, music, laughter, heartbreak and questionable judgment slowly hardened into brick and timber until someone finally thought to put a door around it. It is our favorite bar in Houston. Nothing here tries particularly hard to impress you, which is precisely why it does. The photographs stare from the walls, the ancient floors complain beneath your feet, rivers of candle wax descend toward the bar, and the jukebox provides a soundtrack while the staircase disappears upstairs in precisely the manner sensible people in ghost stories are warned against following. Naturally, we follow it. La Carafe is famously said to be haunted, although whether the footsteps, shadows and unexplained sounds belong to ghosts or merely to history refusing to leave is almost beside the point. Outside, Houston races toward tomorrow. Inside, time seems to have misplaced the address… We have visited grander bars, newer bars and certainly better lit bars, but none possesses this peculiar mixture of romance, mischief, history and mystery. La Carafe does not feel like a bar decorated to look old. It feels like an old story that happens to serve drinks. And if I were a ghost, I can think of far worse places to spend eternity!

Sweet spot for beer, wine, and friends. Juke box and sometime live music. Oldest bar in Houston. Now also takes credit cards. Visiting is a must!

Such an intimate, spooky vibe! Sam Houston spent the night here!one of the oldest buildings in Houston. It is such a unique experience and great ghostly atmosphere! Good beer selection, upstairs amazing downtown view. Great bartending with the history of the building. Come have a drink with some ghosts! (Cash only) 👻

We just happened on this place while trying to find another spot. They don’t open till 2 so that was perfect! What’s best is the atmosphere and the history! I think it’s the oldest bar in Houston. They still use the regular cash register from years back! Also has an old juckbox that works!

What a neat spot to enjoy a delicious glass of wine, enjoy some chill ambience, and listen to vintage tunes on a classic jukebox! We popped in here for a pre-dinner drink and wish we would have had more time! The wine selection was great and the vibe was perfection. Highly recommend!

This building has been around since the mid-1800s, and I'm a sucker for any spot with history! This spot is beer and wine ONLY and offers munchies such as chips or crisps, depending on the noun of your preference. It's a cool spot to go and chill while enjoying a cold beer or a glass of wine. Yes, some of the wines and beers offered are local. There are two levels to this location, and both offer a very cool atmosphere as there are various oddities surrounding the interior. There is patio seating on both levels, which offers nice calming views. This spot is rumored to be haunted, but I can neither confirm or deny the rumors. Stop in, take a load off, and relax. Perhaps you may have a paranormal time? Or, if anything, enjoy a good time with good people and a cool atmosphere!

It is very small but decent. The bartender doesn't know how to use a card machine, but he is a nice and welcoming person. Not much beer options though. Hey it is worth stopping by for a drink
