Houston Zoo is one of our favorite places to visit as a family. The zoo is clean, well organized, and has a wonderful variety of animals. There is always something interesting to see, and every visit feels like a new adventure.
My children especially enjoy seeing the giraffes, elephants, and big cats. The exhibits are beautiful, and the animals appear well cared for. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable.
The zoo is both fun and educational, and it’s a great place to spend the day with family. We always leave with wonderful memories and look forward to coming back. Highly recommended for both children and adults!
We didn’t go at the weekend ,weekday is better

During my stay in Houston back in October 2014, my friends and I spent a wonderful Saturday exploring the Houston Zoo. It was the perfect recreational getaway.

What I loved most about this zoo is how green, shaded, and well-landscaped it.

Walking through the pathways felt like strolling through a beautiful park. The exhibits are spacious and the animals are well cared for. It’s an amazing, relaxing place to visit with friends or family.

We had such an amazing family experience at Houston Zoo. From the moment we walked in, everything felt organized, family-friendly, and full of energy. The zoo is very clean, well maintained, and the staff throughout the park were welcoming and helpful. There is a huge variety of animals and exhibits, and you can easily spend the entire day there without getting bored.

If you are planning to visit, I highly recommend buying tickets in advance because the entrance lines can get very busy, especially on weekends and holidays. Also, if you live in Texas and think you may visit more than once a year, the membership is absolutely worth it. The benefits, discounts, and unlimited visits make it a great value for families.

For parents with kids, bringing a stroller is extremely helpful. The zoo is large, and little ones can get tired quickly from all the walking. A stroller also helps carry snacks, water, and extra items comfortably throughout the day.

One thing to keep in mind is that water and some food items inside can get a bit expensive if you are on a budget. I definitely recommend bringing your own water bottles and snacks when possible. There are also quick snack and food options right after entering the main entrance, which is convenient if you want to grab something fast before starting your visit.

Overall, Houston Zoo is one of the best family attractions in Houston. Great atmosphere, excellent exhibits, and a perfect place to create family memories. We will definitely be coming back again.

Good place to be. The museum is well kept. They closed at 5 today. Fortunately not much pedestrian traffic at the time of visit (Mid May Monday). We had to use the app at the front entrance to get in b/c we did not prepurchase tickets. A large QR code is there for you to scan to get tickets.

I’d give Houston Zoo a solid 4 stars overall. You can comfortably see most of it in about 3 hours—and the kids had a great time, which is what matters most.
That said, some areas felt extremely crowded. The Galapagos exhibit in particular was packed, making it difficult to fully enjoy or even see everything. Several pathways and popular exhibits were congested, which took away from the experience a bit. It also seemed like there may be a high number of animals in certain enclosures; for example, we couldn’t even get a clear count on the elephants, and it felt a bit excessive.
There was also a ton of construction going on so lots of detours and animals you could not see.
On the positive side, it’s great that you’re allowed to bring your own food and drinks, which makes a big difference for families. Gift shops and restrooms are easy to find and well-distributed throughout the park.
Parking can be a challenge—arrive right when it opens or about 20 minutes before if possible. Otherwise, you may spend quite a while circling for a spot.
Helpful suggestion for the zoo: It may be worth exploring crowd management strategies, especially around high-traffic exhibits to improve both guest experience and animal comfort.

The Houston Zoo was great! The staff were all super friendly and helpful, which made the whole experience even better. The highlight was definitely baby Kirby. Adorable. We spent ages just watching her and the rest of the herd.

Zoo Lights was great but once you've been once you've seen it all. Make sure you go with a fun group that will add to the experience since the lights

Simply an amazing Zoo! We had a fantastic time with the kids. Everything is clean, well-maintained, and truly built with love. We enjoyed all the small details, like the animal figurines, statues, and decorations. The layout of the viewing areas is thoughtfully designed so you can still see the animals up close, even when they’re resting in the shade. Special kudos to the lady hosting at the carousel 🎠—you are awesome!

We moved away from Houston about three years ago, and during this visit to see family, we took our child to the Houston Zoo again. It was truly unforgettable! Compared to three years ago, there have been many improvements, so much so that we couldn’t finish exploring it all in one afternoon. We went back the next day, allowing our child to fully experience the charm of the zoo. Highly recommended!

The Houston Zoo is a huge place with many animals. They were setting up for the night, to celebrate Halloween. We were there in the early evening, so my granddaughter could see the animals. She saw monkeys, a tiger, and so much more. She was delighted and had a great time.
    But…
I am a true believer all wild animals being free especially Elephants.
F-A-C-E FREE ALL CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS! Elephants are social animals they move in groups they were separated, the young calf gathered a small amount of hay and walk completely to the other side of a gated area, were he handed it off to- I believe his mother:(

“The Houston Zoo is a must-visit destination for animal lovers and families! The layout is well-organized, making it easy to explore the diverse habitats and exhibits. The animals are well cared for, and the educational displays provide fascinating insights into conservation efforts. Highlights include the Kipp Aquarium, the African Forest, and the orangutan exhibit, which are all beautifully designed.

The zoo also offers great amenities, including clean restrooms, plenty of seating areas, and various food options. It’s evident that a lot of effort goes into maintaining the grounds, as everything is clean and well-kept.
